Vicki’s October layout is so whimsical and romantic that I can’t help but fall in love with it. While all the other ladies focused on the more steampunk themed patterns and ephemera, Vicki decided to focus on the floral themes and butterflies. She did use the gears, but she managed to keep them from effecting the overall delicate style of the layout. Read on to find out how!
One way that Vicki kept her layout on the delicate side was her balance of patterns. Most of the layout is covered by the rose patterned paper. Since the colours aren’t busy, it doesn’t draw away from the photo and ephemera. Vicki also portioned off the section with the busier pattern. Since the background of this piece is also pink though, it melds in well with the rose patterned background.
When Vicki decorated her chipboard gears, she matched the colour with the gold gears and the blue tones in the patterned paper. This keeps them from standing out and overtaking the layout. She also added in some small gears cut out of gold cardstock, which is much thinner than the chipboard. The variation in thickness helps the gears blend back down into the background.
Vicki also popped up her fussy-cut flower ephemera and layered it over the gears, making the flowers stand out more.
I love how Vicki used her string to frame the photo. Using the string and the butterfly over the top of the photo really bring it into the layout. The gold dusted butterfly wings especially add that bit of whimsy to match the layout theme, and pulls the photo in with the gold dusted die-cut flowers Vicki added to the layout.
Here is a quick draft:
Just one more October layout to go- keep posted!
