Have you noticed a theme in Laurie’s layouts? I am always surprised how Laurie can make any layout work with photos of flamingos! The photos Laurie used in this layout also perfectly suit the steampunk style of the paper line~
In order to add some substance behind her photos so that they were not just floating on her black background, Laurie used the gold foil paper from the kit to make a matting block. However, instead of just leaving it with the texture it came with, Laurie decided to bring out the steampunk style using the Tim Holtz Mechanics 3D Texture Fades embossing folder. I love how she added in some pink alcohol ink to bring out the pinks in the paper and photos. It really helps to tie all the elements together!
Have you tried these 3D embossing folders yet? It always surprises me how much depth and detail you can get with these. There is so much dimension that you can easily see the pattern even in a photo of the layout (regular embossing tends to be less clear in photos). There are some awesome new ones coming out in the upcoming releases, so keep an eye out in store!
Another way Laurie incorporated her photos into the layout is fussy-cut ephemera. I know fussy-cutting can be time consuming, but it is an easy way to add some ephemera and dimension to your layout. Laurie actually added some of her fussy-cut ephemera right overtop of her photos, connecting them to the other fussy-cut elements below.
Here is a rough draft of Laurie’s layout design (sans ephemera >_<):
